Edmonds Rehabilitation

Location: Edmonds, WA

Design Goals: The owners of this 1960s Edmonds home came to H2D after their basement flooded. They were in need, not only of a full-gut basement remodel, but also a reconfiguration of the main floor and exterior of the home. The design of the project was aimed at taking a holistic look at the flow, layout, efficiency and styling of the interior and exterior of the home. The main floor of the home was reconfigured to allow for a more open plan with new ceiling treatments to give a sense of volume to the spaces. A modern coffered ceiling was designed for the living and dining areas and a large light well with skylights was designed over the kitchen. The new open plan and light airy color palette helped to create light-filled living spaces with views out to the Puget Sound beyond. The kitchen was fully reconfigured with a large island, new finishes, and a generous walk-in pantry. The primary suite was relocated and expanded to allow for an enlarged primary bedroom, bathroom, and closet. The lower floor was reconfigured and finished out with new bedrooms, new bathrooms, laundry, and recreation spaces. The exterior of the home was refreshed with new siding and color scheme along with new windows and doors. The renovation fully transformed the home giving it a contemporary and welcoming feel.

Style: Midcentury Transitional

Design Challenges + Site Constraints: Working within the constraints of the existing footprint required a thoughtful reconfiguration of interior spaces to improve flow, functionality, and overall efficiency. The design needed to balance program requirements with opportunities to enhance livability, carefully aligning key spaces to capture views while maintaining privacy and spatial hierarchy. Maximizing natural light was also a priority, prompting strategic adjustments to openings and circulation to bring daylight into the home. Throughout, the project sought to strengthen the connection to the outdoors, creating a more open and cohesive relationship between interior living spaces and the surrounding environment.
