Magnolia Tudor
Location: Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle, WA
Design Goals: H2D’s Magnolia Tudor project centered on a comprehensive interior remodel of this classic Tudor home, thoughtfully reimagined to enhance both functionality and comfort while preserving its traditional character. The main and upper floors were extensively renovated, including reconfiguration of walls to improve flow, natural light, and efficiency in the home. The kitchen was re-designed as the heart of the renovation, designed with modern amenities and timeless detailing that harmonizes with the home’s original style. The primary suite was fully transformed, accompanied by a carefully updated bathroom that blends classic materials with contemporary convenience. On the lower level, a cozy craft workshop was created, offering a warm and inspiring space tailored for creativity and personal projects. Throughout the home, finishes, fixtures, and architectural details were selected to remain true to the Tudor aesthetic—ensuring that each update feels cohesive, refined, and respectful of the home’s heritage while supporting the homeowner’s lifestyle.
Style: Modern Tudor
Design Challenges + Site Constraints: Working within the constraints of the existing home presented a series of nuanced design challenges that required both precision and creativity. The remodel was limited to the original footprint, meaning that every spatial improvement had to be carefully executed within a framework of tight, pre-defined existing conditions. Many areas of the home featured compact rooms and restricted circulation paths, demanding thoughtful reconfiguration to enhance usability without expanding the structure. The upper floor posed a particularly complex challenge. A new layout was introduced to improve function and livability, but this required navigating sloped ceilings and low head heights typical of Tudor architecture. Balancing comfort, code requirements, and spatial efficiency called for custom solutions, including strategic placement of built-ins and careful design around the existing low slope of the ceilings. The kitchen renovation was another exercise in restraint and ingenuity. Working within a very limited footprint, the design focused on optimizing storage, workflow, and openness without compromising the home’s traditional character. Every element was intentionally placed to make the space feel larger and more functional than its physical dimensions might suggest. Throughout the project, material and finish selections were guided by a commitment to the home’s original style. Maintaining a cohesive palette that aligns with the traditional Tudor aesthetic required disciplined choices—ensuring that all new interventions feel seamless, timeless, and deeply rooted in the home’s architectural heritage.
