Innis Arden Farmhouse

Location: Innis Arden neighborhood of Shoreline, WA

Design Goals: This Innis Arden home was transformed from a 1950s brick residence into a modern farmhouse. The main floor was nearly completely rebuilt, introducing vaulted ceilings and an open, functional layout. Additions to both the front and rear of the home created larger, more connected living spaces. At the center of the home, a spacious great room brings together the living room, dining area, and kitchen in an open plan. Each space takes advantage of sweeping views of Puget Sound. The main floor also includes a primary suite, junior bedroom suite, large mudroom, pantry, welcoming entry, and garage. The lower level was also reconfigured to improve functionality. A new bedroom suite and large recreation area provide additional space for family living and entertaining.

Style: Modern Farmhouse

Design Challenges + Site Constraints: Transforming this home required balancing the possibilities of a fresh start with the constraints of the existing structure. Rather than attempt a costly renovation of the original walls and roof, the most practical solution was to rebuild from the main floor assembly up. The design also needed to satisfy the neighborhood architectural board while respecting the surrounding homes and preserving neighbors’ views of Puget Sound. Careful planning and collaboration helped create a design that maximized the home’s potential while remaining sensitive to its setting.
