Innis Arden Midcentury
Location: Innis Arden neighborhood of Shoreline, WA
Design Goals: Located in the Innis Arden neighborhood of Shoreline, this hillside home captures sweeping views of the Puget Sound from all three levels. The owners partnered with H2D Architecture + Design for a full down-to-the-studs remodel, reimagining the home to better support modern living. The main floor was completely reconfigured to enhance flow, functionality, and connection to the surrounding views. Relocating the kitchen allowed for a more open and integrated living, dining, and entry sequence, while also accommodating a new mudroom, powder room, and bedroom wing. Circulation throughout the home was significantly improved by redesigning and repositioning both the upper and lower stairways, creating a more intuitive and efficient movement between levels. Upstairs, the layout was transformed into a spacious primary suite featuring a bedroom, spa-like bathroom, walk-in closet with integrated laundry, built-in storage, and a dedicated office. The lower level was minimally adjusted to accommodate the new stair configuration while maintaining much of the existing layout. Select exterior updates were also introduced to refresh the home’s street presence and better reflect the interior transformation.
Style: Contemporary Midcentury
Design Challenges + Site Constraints: A primary challenge of the project was working within the constraints of the existing footprint while transforming an inefficient and compartmentalized layout. The original home was divided into a series of small, inefficient rooms that limited flow, functionality, and connection between spaces. Without the option to expand, the design required a complete rethinking of how the interior was organized. This led to a strategic relocation of the stair and a reconfiguration of key program elements—effectively “flipping” and realigning spaces to create a more intuitive, efficient, and cohesive layout that better supports modern living.
