Edmonds Open Axis
Location: Edmonds, WA
Design Goals: Edmonds Open Axis reimagines the main floor of this Edmonds home as a cohesive, light-filled space organized along a clear architectural spine. The kitchen, dining, and living areas were fully remodeled and opened into a seamless plan that strengthens visual connections between the spaces, maximizes daylight, and connects to surrounding views. Clean sightlines and intentional alignments create a sense of flow, while layered materials introduce warmth and depth. A custom screen wall subtly defines the zones and a built-in wet bar provides a gathering and entertaining area in the dining room. Custom detailed millwork—including integrated storage and feature built-ins—adds rhythm and function, while a refaced fireplace anchors the living space as a central focal point. Beyond the public areas, the main floor bedrooms and bathroom were thoughtfully reconfigured to improve layout efficiency and privacy. These spaces were fully renovated with updated finishes and fixtures, creating a cohesive material language throughout the level. The result is a modernized interior that balances openness and intimacy, elevating everyday living through clarity of plan and refined detail.
Style: Transitional with some midcentury modern detailing
Design Challenges + Site Constraints: A primary challenge of Edmonds Open Axis was the main floor’s split-level condition. The kitchen and dining areas sit at one level, while the living spaces are set slightly above, creating a physical and visual separation that limited flow. The design goal was to unify these areas into a cohesive open plan—without altering the original two-level architecture. Rather than eliminating the level change, the design solution embraces it. Careful alignment of sightlines, millwork, and material transitions reinforces a continuous axis that visually connects the spaces across the two elevations. A custom screen wall and open railings were strategically placed to define zones while preserving openness and daylight. Consistent flooring and finish palettes further dissolve boundaries, allowing the rooms to read as a single environment despite the split levels. By working within the existing structure, the project maintains the character of the original architecture while transforming the experience of the main floor into one that feels connected, fluid, and intentional.
