Snohomish Architectural Renewal

Location: Snohomish, WA

Design Goals: This extensive renovation and addition project in Snohomish, WA transformed an aging home that was in need of significant updates. Rather than fully rebuilding, the design focused on reinvesting in the existing structure, modernizing the residence while expanding its living spaces to better support the homeowner’s lifestyle. The goal was to create a more open and connected floor plan, increase usable square footage, and establish a stronger relationship between the home and surrounding property. The design included multiple additions that transformed both the interior and exterior of the residence. On the upper floor, new additions expanded the primary suite and secondary bedrooms, creating more comfortable and private living spaces. Additional square footage was added above the existing garage, while the removal of an upper-level deck allowed for further expansion of the home's interior footprint. Inside, the layout was comprehensively reworked to create a spacious great room that serves as main gathering area of the home. Walls were strategically removed and relocated to improve circulation and sightlines, resulting in a more open and cohesive living environment. The kitchen was completely redesigned with a new layout, updated finishes, fixtures, and appliances, while the bathrooms were transformed with modern materials and thoughtfully reconfigured floor plans. The exterior received a complete refresh with new windows, doors, siding, and roofing, enhancing both performance and curb appeal. New and enlarged window openings were carefully incorporated to maximize natural light and strengthen connections to the outdoors. The existing rear deck was removed and replaced with an on-grade patio, creating a more accessible outdoor living area that integrates seamlessly with the landscape.

Style: Contemporary

Design Challenges + Site Constraints: One of the primary design challenges was integrating substantial additions with the existing rooflines and architectural forms. Careful attention was given to the massing, proportions, and roof geometry of the new construction to ensure the expanded residence felt cohesive and intentional rather than a collection of disconnected additions. The design focused to preserve and enhance the home's architectural character while introducing new spaces that meet the homeowners' needs. Fortunately, the generous size of the property provided ample flexibility for expansion, allowing the design to focus on architectural integration and functionality rather than being constrained by site limitations. This freedom enabled the project to maximize both interior living space and outdoor amenities while maintaining a balanced relationship with the surrounding landscape.
