Edmonds Refresh
Location: Edmonds, WA
Design Goals: Located on the hillside overlooking the Edmonds Bowl with expansive views to the Puget Sound beyond, this home was reimagined through a comprehensive remodel focused on the main living spaces and primary suite. The main floor was fully transformed, including vaulting the ceilings to introduce volume, light, and a greater sense of openness. The new open-concept layout enhances flow between spaces while orienting daily living toward the surrounding views. At the center of the home, the kitchen was reconfigured and opened to the adjacent living and dining areas, creating a cohesive, light-filled great room. The redesigned layout improves functionality and circulation while establishing a strong visual and spatial connection to the landscape beyond. A modest addition was introduced to rework the primary suite, allowing for a more comfortable and efficient arrangement of the bedroom, bathroom, and closet. This expansion supports a more private and refined retreat, with improved proportions and thoughtful organization. Throughout the home, updated interior and exterior finishes unify the design, giving the residence a fresh, contemporary character while reinforcing its connection to the site and views.

Design Challenges + Site Constraints: Vaulting the existing ceilings required a careful and nuanced approach, as the roof structure did not conform to current Edmonds code requirements. Rather than altering the exterior massing, the design focused on working entirely within the existing roof form, introducing interior vaulting while preserving the original structure. This constraint demanded coordination between structure, insulation, and interior detailing to achieve the desired sense of volume without impacting the exterior massing. The result is a series of expanded interior spaces that feel open and light-filled, accomplished through strategic interventions within the limits of the existing framework.
